October Snow

After the late October snow yesterday the sky is clear and bright today.  I was able to frame up some leaves and berries in closeup with ice and snow on them and a nice warm fall background to set off the image nicely.  This is one of the guidelines I follow with my photography.  Take the opportunities that present themselves.  You should never force a photo the viewer can always tell when you do that.  Let nature show her wonder and capture it when she does.

Sunday Oct 23th Harriman State Park

This past Sunday I went for a hike and photo jaunt with my Mom in Harriman State Park.  We followed one of my favorite streams for a while.  It was nice to see so many people in the park and on the trails enjoying nature on that fine Sunday morning.  This park is a treasure and it never fails to recharge my batteries walking along its many paths and streams.  We are supposed to get some snow here tonight so i amy be able to get some snow photos with some fall color left.  It is these moments that make the most striking photos when you are able to show something unexpected.  I will be moving into the studio this weekend as well as I can not ignore the call of my watercolor paints and brushes much longer.  There are paintings from our Italy trip last year still screaming to be painted.  They waited patiently as I set a hectic pace with the camera running around New York and Cape Cod this year..... the paintings will not wait much longer.  It is important to follow your art when the muse calls you... If you ignore the muse it will simply call to another who will serve its means..... For now the muse has been in the streams, waterfalls and gorges of New York, but the studio now calls.  Maybe just one more hike.....

Fall Photography - Heading into the Woods

With the cooler weather starting to settle in I am anxious to get to the woods with my camera to capture the fall colors.  I am heading out for the next two weekends.  This Sunday I will be going to Dover Stone Church Falls and Indian Brook Falls with my Mom and my Cousin Marie.  These are two of my favorite spots to photograph locally and a great way to start the fall season.  Next weekend I will head out to central New York to photograph Buttermilk Falls Gorge in Ithaca and Watkins Glen.  It will make for a busy day next Saturday, but I hope to come back with some great photos.

Where do you like to photograph in the fall?

And now a brief break from the Venice photos to bring you Autumn in NY.

Minisceongo Creek, Stony Point, NY

This morning a slight departure from the Venice photos.... Don't worry I have plenty more of those to share with you over the next few days. I just thought you might enjoy a break from my Italy photos to see what things like like here in New York right now. Fall is in full show of its colors and the morning light makes things look spectacular.

Get out there and take a walk in the woods... You'll thank me for it.

Here Comes Autumn

I am ready for fall this year. I am looking forward to the crisp cool nights and the trees changing color. I will be posting a few favorites from years past and perhaps a new image or two if I get out at all this weekend.

Where to Shoot...

SilverMine - Harriman State park NY - Oct 2008

The fall is rapidly approaching here in NY. The trees are still very green thanks to some really wet weather this summer, but you can feel fall in the air. Crisp and chilly. I love Autumn. It is one of my favorite times of the year to take photographs. My dilemma this year is where to shoot. There are so many places I'd like to shoot (and paint) and only so many weeks to do it in and of course there is that whole having a job thing.... Anywhere here are just a few of the places I'd like to get to this fall with my camera.

  • Cape Cod - Cranberry Harvest what could be better.

  • Catskill Mountains - I don't shoot in the Catskills nearly enough.

  • Lancaster County PA - Amish Country. I think the old stone farms will be great in the fall.

  • Upstate NY - Wine Country. Luckily I'll be attending a wedding here in October and may get some time to take fall images.

Where do you want to paint or photograph this fall?

Fall is in the air

Hello Fellow Artists-

I have been back from vacation for two weeks. I am back in the work groove. I have picked my next painting picked out. I will on "Early Morning Sandwich, Ma." from my last post. I am preparing to retire to the studio to work on it. I have been thinking of how to approach for a while now and hope to get it done today. I'll post photos of it when done. After that I'd like to work on a couple of Cap Cod Cottages.

I am also looking forward to a photo workshop I am taking on 10/20.

What projects are you working on as the summer turns to Autumn?
