The Contenders

Hello Fellow Photographers and Painters,

As I said yesterday I am going to submit a portfolio of my photos for consideration of membership at the Cape Cod Art Association. My photos will be in the May portfolio Review and I'll take stab at submitting paintings in the fall.

I must submit five recent original pieces. I am posting the first seven contenders here. Take a look and give your thoughts. Go ahead I can take it. If there are pieces that should come out to strengthen the submission or if I should go back and look for more don't be afraid to tell me. Criticism is how we get better.

I'd make the last one my first choice. Particularly interesting colors and something most of us wouldn't be there to capture. The others are beautiful and, I think, a bit more "standard" than that last one. But then, I don't know what the criteria for submission/jurying are.

Beautiful photos each and every one. I also would keep the last one and from there it depends on how they will be grouped.. are they chooseing one or more? The red leaves hanging next to the last one would really pop.. Good luck and let us know how it goes..

and thanks for the comment and visit to my blog. :)

Thank You both for your comments. The CCA requires 5 pieces of your work representative of what you do all recent and nothing assisted by a teacher or instructor in the creation of. So they can judge you for membership. I feel pretty good about my nature photographs and will see what happens. deciding when and if my paintings are ready for review will be a more difficult procedure.
Thanks Again,
CS

Carl,
Thanks for the comment on my blog, I use a Canon EOS digital. I know it isn't supposed to be the best, but I am self taught and the lenses that I had for my 35MM fit this camera. affordable too.. Any of the photos you posted would be fantastic examples of your work, but if that is what they are after I would hesitate to use all of the slowed water ones they are great don't get me wrong but one or two will do, and the others will showcase some of your other strengths.. Just my opinion.. Thanks again.. :)

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for the Comment. I am Shooting EOS Digital too for the same reasons and have been very happy with it so far. I shoot Bronica ETRSI (mostly for B&W) when I still get the itch to shoot film, but the workflow is so ssslllooww. I almost never do that anymore.

Great advice on the water shots. I'll figure out which is weakest and replce with a diferent type of image. I am drawn to the water shots... but a little of that goes a long way when you are submitting pieces for review.

Thanks for the comment!

Omigosh, these are so beautiful...! It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think the bottom one is my favorite. There is something soulful about it that speaks to me.

I am able to link back now...

Hi Carl,
Glad to finally be here and able to view your work.
1, 3 and 7 would be my choices for both different aspects of the subject matter and also technique. The rest are beautiful as well but similar, unless you are submitting a themed series.
Your work is beautiful - your love of nature shining brightly.

Josie- Thanks for the complimen
Janice- Welcome! Glad I solved my technical problems that stopped people from posting. Thanks for your kind words. I have a general consensus from everyone who posted and will add a few images this weekend and gulp... maybe remove a couple.

Excellent photography Carl. I would choose #1 and #7. I think the water slo mo's have been done to death by everyone else on earth.

I also like 2, 4 and 5, not that my opinion counts ;)

Hi Pat! Welcome to my blog. Thanks for your comments. I think you are right about the frozen water images. I still like #3 personaly so it may stay. Not Sure yet. I am going to post a couple of more images this weekend including the one you like from the earlier post.
I am really glad I put these out there for everyone to see. I am getting valuable feedback. 5 photos is not a lot to submit to show off your 'personality' as a photographer so I welcome everyone's thoughts in this process.

#3 is nice, but that's all...yes, you got the technique of the water, but I have seen that composition a lot.

Dear Carl,
I think that you have an enormous amount of talent. Your eye for composition and the execution of the shots are very very good.
Imho,
Pat
