Beach Portraits

Our journey to the cape includes a new house this year. Our friends kids are growing, we were a bit tired of the old cottage we stayed in.... so we decided to try our luck with a new house this year.
From the day we arrived I had picked out the spot to do some beach portraits. Right along our path to the beach was a small dune and see grass that looked out on the sky and just a bit of Cape Cod Bay in the background. Around 6pm the light was just right as the sun is in it daily slide to the western horizon. Everything was lit from a high side angle with warm golden light and open shadows. We were able to get these great fun shots.

Woods Hole, MA

We journeyed to Woods Hole today. It was worth the three passes through town to find a parking space. The harbor was beautiful.
Happy Shooting!

Cape Cod Light

Hello Fellow Artists-

I got up this morning and headed to the salt marsh across the road from the beach we are staying at. The light here on Cape Cod is really something special. Even the most simple landscapes caught in the warm glow and clear atmosphere of the light at the start and end of the day are really special. I can fully understand why Edward Hopper spent so much time here. Hopefully I will put brush to paper tonight and start painting some of these wonderful scenes.
Cheers,
Carl

Sunrise Sandwich MA 8/25/08

Hello Fellow Artists-
Monday morning on the cape brought us a great sunrise. It looked like it would be socked in and I would not get any shots, but things worked out and I got the shot above. The day followed with some wandering in shops and galleries including the wonderful Fresh Paint Gallery . This little Gallery in Yarmouth is one of our favorites we go back year after year. After a nice day we all gathered at the Bee Hive Restaurant in Sandwich for a great meal and company! A great day on the cape.
I promise more pictures of friends and family tomorrow.
Cheers,
Carl

Goodbye Old Friend

About a month ago we had to say goodbye to an old friend, our cat Dexter. He was with us for 17 years. Admittedly dexter had social issues and did not accept (OK read that as went ballistic with strangers) many people besides my wife and I. Very few made it into Dexter's inner circle. However he loved us unconditionally. We could count on him to be waiting for us at the door at the end of the day. During the evening TV or reading hours he would settle on my lap and pur. When we slept he spent most of night curled up on my wife. She complained that he slept like a lead weight. It is funny we miss everything now even the things that annoyed us all the time.

You were a good cat Dexter. We miss you everyday!

The Munchkins

Hello Fellow Artists:

My(amazing, funny, wonderful) nieces were here visiting (with my brother and sister-in-law) for a week recently. We had so much fun. I took some portraits of them one night. There is a shot of the two of them posted here.

We also had a great day where they wanted to paint. we painted some watercolors of Sunflowers. The paintings are marvelous! They both have a great sense of color and design. There is some great potential there!

Lafayette Theater

My Town (Suffern, NY) has a great old theater in the center of town. The Lafayette was built in 1924 and has been fully refurbished inside by the town. All fall they run classic movies on Saturday mornings, besides the current films. They even have an organist playing the old Wurlitzer organ.

I drive by the theater almost every night. Tonight I decided to get a photo of it all lit up. I am glad I did. The old place looks pretty good!

Capturing the Light

Hello friends:

Sorry for the long absence. This summer has been one with many great visits from family and friends. It has been wonderful having our loved ones around, but it left little time for blogging. I do have some good material though so i should be blogging a bit more now.

I had a conversation with the great landscape photographer Nick Zungoli at an event at his gallery recently. He was remarking that we are not really shooting our subjects, but the light falling on them. I was reminded of this Saturday evening. We had taken some visiting family and friends on the Circle Line for the harbor lights tour of NYC. Now I admit... I had to know what to do with the camera for the these shots, bit the table was set for me by the end of day light and I merely had to capture an adequate exposure. Half the battle is getting to your spot when the light is right.
