Stony Brook - Harriman State Park

I took a short hike along the aptly named Stony Brook today and got these great photos.  It was cloudy which helped with the lighting.  I also used an 8x neutral density filter to slow most of them down and make the water blurred and silky.  I am really happy with these and am smiling thinking that my old friend Dave King would have called them a 'gob-smacking treat'.  I sure do miss seeing his enthusiastic comments and reading his poems.  I hope his heaven has some amazing scenery for him to capture with his pen.

St Catherine of Bologna Art Show - Ringwood, NJ

After four years (and 7 awards) in the photography category of the St Catherine of Bologna Art Show I decided to do something different and enter some of my watercolors this year.  I was honored with a judge's award for my watercolor of Nobska Light on Cape Cod.  I am humbled and thrilled by this award!  It is the kick I needed to keep painting.  To all of the folks who work and volunteer to put on this great show each year…. a BIG THANK YOU!

Portrait Shoot: Dakota

I feel I am most successful in a portrait when the sitter's personality has been captured in the shot.  Simple lighting that can be moved around a little with out having to be too fussy is the key for me.  Once the session has a flow and the sitter is comfortable you don't want to have a lot of stop and start.  In the next week or so I will do a post with what equipment I use and how I set it up for my portraits.  Don't be afraid.  You do not have to keep formulas for lighting ratios in your head and there will be no test.  Just some friendly advice that can hopefully help de-mystify taking portraits.  I think later this summer This will be the topic of one of my full day workshops if enough people are interested.

Portrait Session: Chloe

Many thanks to Chloe for modeling for me today.  We got some great photos and I figured out what photo gear I need to bring when I book in home portraits.

Spring Photography Workshop

I am proud to announce I will be teaching a spring photography workshop with award winning photographer Michael Malandra in Harriman State Park on Tuesday June 10th, 2014. From 8am to ~5pm

Harriman State Park

The workshop will include:

Three hours of photography in Harriman State Park (exact location to be determined the week of the workshop to maximize potential of getting great photos!) with hands on instruction by Michael and myself. We will teach you how to get the best image possible in a fun and relaxing way.

After the photo session we will move on to the beautiful Torne Valley Vineyards where we will have lunch.

Michael and I will then review the workflow we use to turn our captured images into the beautiful photos you see in shows and galleries.

We will then move on to reviewing your images and picking one to edit using photoshop and the other tips and techniques we use to produce our photographs. Once the image is edited we will print a stunning 12x18 print of your image and put it in an 18x24 mat ready for you to hang in your home or office.

Finally we will end the day with a wine tasting! This is a great way to cap off this fun filled day of learning!

You will leave the workshop armed with new confidence in your abilities and handouts of tips and techniques it has taken us years of photography to learn.
Cost for the workshop is 300$. Space is limited so contact me to reserve your space now. A deposit of 100$ is required to reserve your spot.
We are very excited to team up and present this workshop to you. We feel with two instructors you will benefit from more experience and approaches to nature photography.
