The Carnival is in Town!

I stopped by a church carnival in town tonight to take so pictures.  The best part of the whole evening was seeing the kids and being reminded of how much flat out joy I felt as a little kid at the carnivals and fireworks shows all the towns around us had on the 4th of July.  I can almost taste the cotton candy and see the fireworks hanging in the sky.  I hope to photograph some fireworks this weekend.  In the mean time I hope these photos are as much fun for you to see as they were for me to shoot.

Skylands - Irises in the Wildflower Garden

It was a beautiful Sunday morning in the Wildflower garden at Skylands.  The Irises are starting to bloom and the meadow was wet with dew as the sun peaked over the Ramapo Mountains to start the day.

Minisceongo Creek | After the Deluge

We had storms today that flooded the streets and knocked out power.  There was a state of emergency for a few hours... I was happy as a clam capturing Minisceongo Creek as it surged and tumbled over the rocks in the ravine.  The power of nature is awesome to see.

Butterflies | Oneonta, NY

On my way home from Ithaca Saturday I stopped in at the butterfly conservatory in Oneonta, NY.  My reward for driving the extra distance was several types of butterfly I have not been able to photograph before.  They were very active this visit... probably because it was a nice warm afternoon.  I had to be quick, but got some really nice shots.  I am happy I stopped in for an hour on my journey home.

Enfield Glen in B&W

I chose these three images from my Hike in Enfield Glen yesterday to do in Black and white with a nice sepia finish.  They look like they could have been taken a hundred years ago!  The black and white brings out the tranquility of the place even more.  This is truly a majestic place and worth the trip up to the Finger Lakes.  Next Time I am in Ithaca I will wander the common and photograph the people too.  It is a college town with a lot of great characters around.

Lucifer Falls ...

The straight on shot above from across the glen gives you a better sense of the scale of Lucifer falls than the bottom photo I posted yesterday.  to the right at the top of the falls you can see the staircase I was standing on when I took the shot.

The early morning in the glens of the Finger Lakes is the best time to go.  i only ran into three other people while I was there.  The sounds of rushing water as it flows over the rocks and splashes into the pools is just as wonderful as the sights the streams and waterfalls reveal before your eyes.  I am in awe every time I hike in one of these places.

New York State of Mind | Enfield Glen - Ithaca, NY

If anyone remembers the old 1970's bumper stickers that said Ithaca's Gorges, I am hear to tell you it is true.  I spent the morning photographing Enfield Glen and Lucifer Falls (what a great name for a waterfall) in Ithaca, NY.  The glen is at the south end of Lake Cayuga in Robert Treman State Park.  This glen is similar to Watkins Glen that I photographed last summer except that Watkins Glen is at the bottom of Lake Seneca.  Ithaca has many more waterfalls and gorges to discover this was just a first exploratory trip.  I will head back up this way in the fall and spend more than just a couple of hours.  Central New York and the southern finger lakes are truly a marvel to behold.  I see many more trip to this region in my future.

Mountain Laurel - Skylands

The Mountain Laurel are starting to bloom in Skylands (New Jersey Botanical Gardens).  I look forward to this flower every year!  The pink buds look like candy before they bloom and always tell me that summer is on its way!

Trailside Zoo at Bear Mountain

I decided to make a trip to the Trailside Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park this morning.  I have not been there since I was a small boy.  It is a small zoo, but I am happy to say I had a chance to get some nice photos.

Bald Eagle

Rough Legged Hawk
 Black Bear

 Bald Eagle

 Barred Owl

If you have a little time on your hands and want to spend a nice morning with kids this zoo is perfect, not too big and set in a nicely trailed wooded area by the river.

WildFlower Gardens at Skylands

The wildflower gardens at Skylands are staring to wake up and should make some great photography for the next three months.  Every week different flowers will be blooming starting with the Irises and Mountain Laurel then the Cone Flowers and Butterflies will be out along with many others.  I really enjoy the wildflower gardens over the formal gardens.  They have a more organic layout and offer much more creative photography.  I always enjoy shooting here.  In a later post I will discuss my technical approach to shooting here.  For now enjoy these early offerings.

1964 Mack B85 Thermodyne - Fire Truck

All boys love fire trucks ( Just ask my Great Nephew... Little Man A...) When I saw this truck today at an event I was at I knew I had to take photos of it.....

I was a little depressed when I found out the 'Antique' Truck was only two years older than I am!  but I decided that if it can be an 'antique' and look that good then go ahead and call me an antique.  I don't mind.
