Back to Film...

Lafayette Theater

55 Lafayette Ave

 The old station

Tattoo Parlour

The Station Master's Office

So where was I with my film project... Oh yeah I remember.  I am spending the next year shooting on medium format (120 size film) black and white film.  It took a few rolls for me to get my sea legs back under me and get good exposures.  Now I am deciding on which cameras to use.  All of these were from a recent outing in my town with my FUJI GW690 (6x9 rangefinder camera)  I am thrilled with the tonality and feel the images are getting on film.  I am getting closer to having something to print out.  I may even experiment and print a few out at home and then send them to the lab.
There is a completely different rhythm to shooting on film.  A slower and more thoughtful pace.  I think this comes from only getting 8 frames per roll.  I am just about ready to start photographing New York City on film.  It is my plan to go into the city once a week to look for interesting places and people to photograph.
I also have a few rolls I shot on 6x4.5 film.  They will have to wait until I finish getting prints printed and framed that I am hanging for a show on Saturday.

Keep Makin' Art!

You know, when I saw Lafayette I thought it sounded familiar, then when I read that it's in New York, I understood why. I lived there for 15 years, and I remember Lafayette Ave. Thanks for the memories. I am following you from Trapani, Sicily.

Can't wait to see more pictures of New York as it is now. We left in 1976. We lived in the Bronx, on Arthur Avenue, but my mother and grandmother worked in Hampshire House, right in front of Central Park, and I worked somewhere on 42nd Street and Park Avenue, if I remember correctly (at Pirelli, the office is not there anymore though, they closed down two years after I left).

Your second image (the avenue) and the Station Master's Office are both strangely compelling. They are more than they seem and have some sort of psychological depth which I haven't quite worked out yet. An excellent collection.

Dave- You picked the two that really represent what I am trying to do with Black and White. Color can be a crutch sometimes. I wanted to see if using value, shade and tone alone I could convey a story. I like these two especially because I think the story is open ended and open to interpretation.
