Sprintime in NY

Hello Fellow Artists-
Enjoy this shot I took this spring while I figure out what to work on next. I'll be posting a few of my favorite shots from the last 12 months over the next few days.
Since the leaves have fallen, but the snow has not I am done shooting for a bit. This is just as well as I discovered an issue with my camera and have had to send it back to Canon for repair! Hopefully I won't be without it for too long.
Now my attention will shift to all the painting I did not get done while I have been going crazy with the camera for the last 6 months. I hope to hit the studio for a while on Sunday.
In the next few days I'll post some of my favorite images from this year. let me know if you agree or disagree with my choices. Maybe I'll even put up a few series and you can critique them. Tell me what works and what does not. I won't be looking for flattery here, but rather what you really think. I am always curious what folks think makes a successful photo and why.
Keep Makin' Art!
Carl

I can be very specific for this shot, and why it works for me--beyond my consistent appreciation of what you do with running water, and the monet lighting, which is spring in the NE. Its the bit of the leaves on the left and the grasses at the bottom. People I know would have tried to crop this higher, not recognizing instinctively--or intentionally what those splashes of shape and spring green do. Maybe that's a small thing, but it's those small things that usually work for me, in photos and in paintings.

Adrian - Thanks

Jeannette - Yep. That is one of those things that Nick Zungoli from Exposures Gallery drilled into my head at the workshops I have taken with him. He's always telling me to think about the foreground/midground/background. It has paid off big time this year.

I think it's related to something in writing workshops--it's the choice and placement of the small details that can make or break the whole.

whether it is writing. painting or photography... Good design is good design. For me it is finding it out in nature without artifice.

I really liked this photo but I couldn't tell you why. The comments by Jeannette are really helpful though, perhaps I should look at a photo like a stage picture...looking forward to looking at more.

Kate - Thanks. Yep stage design is like framing up a photo. both generally layout shapes and colors in a rectangle to help convey a story or emotion so very much alike.

Dave - Yeah... Dave's Back! I'll be posting my 5 favorite shots of 2009 for critique this weekend. I am having a tough time figuring out which ones.
