Beyond the Visible Spectrum

I attended the opening of the Beyond the Visible Spectrum exhibit at the gallery at Digital Silver Imaging in Belmont Ma this past Thursday night.  The show includes two of my infrared photos along with the work of Laurie Klein, Tony Sweet and Ron Rosenstock.  The Infrared images are quite extraordinary and DSI did a great job printing and hanging the show.  Many Thanks to Eric Luden and the gang at DSI for a great event.  If you are in the area check out the show.

I will have a booth in the Suffern Street Fair on Sunday June 1st.  If you are in the area stop by and see my work.  I will have images from London, Italy and Suffern among others.

Upcoming events include the workshop I am teaching with Mike Malandra on June 10th (the workshop is full.  Details about our next one will be posted here on the blog.)

My solo show at the Flywheel Gallery will be called "Close to Home" and will include images taken with 50 miles of my home to showcase the beauty of the Hudson Valley.

Infrared - Color or Black and White.

Depending on how you deal with your Infra-Red images they can be color or B&W.  To this point I have been a purist and prefer the B&W images, but here are color versions of some of the images from last week.  What are your thoughts?  Color or B&W?

It is the time of year for infra red B&W!  The skies in central NY are really perfect for this type of shooting add to that the beauty of the Colgate campus and you have a great combination.

Railroad bridge - Suffern, NY

I took this shot of the railroad bridge near my town in late summer. I was going thru some of my IR images and came across it. I was not thrilled with it at first... but now I kinda like the reflections and shapes.

Sunday Morning Nature Photos

I was back at Harriman State Park this morning after a 3 month hiatus. I have photographed there nearly 40 times in the last three years and have gotten some great shots, but needed a break from the place. I spent this summer really thinking about composition and new locations and took the time to get my feet wet with digital InfraRed photography. The result is I am renewed and refreshed. I headed back to Harriman today to the stream near Reeves Meadow to shoot some InfraRed at one of my favorite spots. I must say I am quite happy with the results.... and literally did get my feet wet. One shot could only be captured by taking off my shows and rolling up my jeans so i could get my camera in the perfect location... Ah the things I do for my art. It was actually quite refreshing at 7am! I will be mixing Harriman back into my locations again as I am sure there is a lot to be uncovered in B&W.

Bear Mountain Bridge and Hudson Highlands - Infrared

The sky was perfect today with puffy white clouds and a deep blue sky. I have been waiting for just such a day to photograph the Bear Mountain Bridge and Hudson Highlands in infrared.

It was worth the wait! I found the perfect location that starts at the Fort Montgomery Historic Site. A short walk from there is a small hiking bridge across the Popolopen Creek that allows you to shoot from water level without obstruction. I will be back in the Autumn to shoot this same spot in color.

9/6/2010 - New Infrareds from Skylands

There was incredible light today for infrareds. Nice bright clear day with strong light works best for these photos.

I went back to Skylands to fine tune some compositions I had already photographed and take advantage of being there at the right time of day.

I look forward to shooting this kind of stuff in Italy in a few weeks. Just wonder how I will get all those people out of my shots in the middle of the day. I may have to get used to the idea of people as part of the composition.

Cape Cod

Friends -

I will be off line for the next week. I will be working on a series of infrared B&W images of Cape Cod that I would like to turn into a book and a show.

A couple more infrareds from recent work

It is important to go back thru your edits and make sure you did not miss any great shots. Sometimes ones that did not work for you on the first pass call out to you after a second look. Both of these were rescued from my recycle bin.

I can be ruthless when it comes to editing after I have been out shooting. Some images need to age a little before they are ready.

Wandering Orange County on a Summer Evening

I wandered around Orange County, NY tonight from Goshen to Salisbury Mills and all point in between and came up with these IR photos. It was a good night.

Genesee Street - Utica, NY

I spent a little time in Utica, NY this weekend and got a few Decent IR - B&W shots. The light and clouds on Saturday afternoon were perfect for it.

As a note to my self I must get back up this way and photograph the barns on and near route 20. There are some great old barns and rolling landscapes to photograph.

Skylands in the early evening

Caught some nice light on the way home. I like the play of yellow with orange dots in the flower versus the blue and purple dots in the background.

Funny thing with IR is the same spot changes so much with the time of day. I loved the reflection of the background trees in amidst the water lillys in this one. on Saturday it was al about the sky. Today I also shot down low to pick up the perspective on the water.

Orange County in Black and White

I was going to post these on Monday.... but could not wait to get them up on the blog. So you get two posts today.

These images were taken Sunday morning in Orange County, New York. This is where I grew up and it was pretty rural when I was very young. It is mostly a suburb of NYC now... but every now and again you can find pockets of the regions farming heritage. These subjects lend themselves so well to black and white.
