Fall Workshop Prep

This collection of images was taken this week in preparation for a fall photography workshop I am teaching with Julie Sholz on Saturday.  The students are in for a real treat.  The locations are perfect and conditions look really good.  They shoot get some amazing photos.  I'll post some here on Sunday.

Minisceongo Creek - Another Visit

The photos of Minisceongo Creek from my previous post made me go back again on Monday morning.  The sunny conditions, spring colors and the slowly moving water in small pools led to the most amazing reflections.  This is why I will photograph the same place several times.  The more you know of a place the better your chances of capturing it at its most beautiful.

Minisceongo Creek | Trash

I am a pretty mild mannered guy, but when I find scenes like this on hiking trails it just makes me furious.  This trash was not just at the top of the trail, but down the slope all the way to the streams edge. It was like a dump truck backed up and dumped its contents right there.  I took what i could, but we'll need a work party to go back and clean this mess up....

OK.  My rant is over.  I got to the creek a little later in the morning and got some nice color to play with. I did have to use a 4x Neutral Density filter because it was too bright for slow exposures to blur the water, but it was nice to work in a different light than I am used to... More directional and strong than when i am out at 6 am.  I generally prefer the early morning, but I am pleased with the images I was able to capture.

Foggy Morning Minisceongo Creek

I was faced with a dilemma this morning.... do I have the second cup of coffee or do I grab my camera and get out and shoot in that amazing fog..... I love my coffee as many of you know, but the tug to get out there with my camera won and I am glad it did!

I am so ready for shooting in Ithaca and Watkins Glen this weekend.

Minisceongo Creek | Start of Autumn

Even though I am going out tomorrow and photographing some waterfalls with friends, I could not pass up the flat overcast light and a chance to shoot at Minisceongo after the recent rains.  In fact if it is really foggy in the morning I may head back there before going to the two scheduled waterfalls.  Always take advantage of the light and take the shot when possible.  You'll regret it if you had an opportunity and did not hike and take pictures.  It is better than anything you will find on television.

Minisceongo Creek | After the Deluge

We had storms today that flooded the streets and knocked out power.  There was a state of emergency for a few hours... I was happy as a clam capturing Minisceongo Creek as it surged and tumbled over the rocks in the ravine.  The power of nature is awesome to see.

Final Spring Shots at Minisceongo Creek... I'll be Back in the Fall.

I went out this morning for one final shoot at Minisceongo Creek (unless we get fogged in one morning).  the creek will dry to a trickle in June, unless the rain keeps falling!!  I will head back in the fall to catch the autumn colors reflected in the falls.  It is one of my favorite spots and seems to be different each time I photograph it.
