Fall Workshop Prep

This collection of images was taken this week in preparation for a fall photography workshop I am teaching with Julie Sholz on Saturday.  The students are in for a real treat.  The locations are perfect and conditions look really good.  They shoot get some amazing photos.  I'll post some here on Sunday.

Autumn Workshop with Nick Zungoli at Indian Brook Falls.

Well today was a great day!  I went another workshop with Nick Zungoli.  We picked up a location that on a foggy or snowy morning will be fun to shoot.  We ended up at one of my favorite spots... Indian Brook Falls.  The reflected color at around 10am was simply awesome!!  We all ended up with some killer photographs.

A Morning of Waterfalls

This morning I headed to two of my favorite waterfalls with two of my favorite people!  That is Dover Stone Church Falls and Indian Brook Falls with my Mom and my Cousin Marie.  Thank you both for heading out for an early hike with me!  We broke the law..... hehe Dover Stone Church is closed from the recent storms, but it seamed fine so we just trudged on... I was rewarded at Indian brook with a sight I have never seen.  For the first time in five years of photographing this waterfall there was not a tree trunk stuck in the middle of this beautiful waterfall.  Thanks for the great company!  It made a great hike even better.

More HDR Experimentation.

I photographed More HDR (High Dynamic Range) images today at one of my favorite places... Indian Brook Falls in Garrison, NY. I took these shots around two pm. Anyone who shoots waterfalls knows this is normally a useless time to photograph the falls because the strong light together with the white of the water makes for harsh lighting with blown out highlights in the water. HDR uses multiple exposures of the same scene (for example one taken as the meter in the camera suggests then one shot two stops over and a third two stops overexposed. This should give you enough information to capture the parts of the image that can't be recorded in a single image. It can have some very striking results. Here are my efforts for today. I am quite happy with them. Note the detail in the lights and the shadow areas you might not normally see. This effect can be too much and I would not suggest using it all the time, but I like these and really think the B&Ws are really quite stunning.

Dover Stone Church Falls

Indian Brook Falls - Garrison NY

Today with my Friend Mike Malandra I headed to Dover Stone Church Falls and stopped for a few shots at Indian Brook on the way home. These are two of my favorite spots. They did not disappoint! We got some awesome shots. The key for me today to getting good shots was getting in early before the light got too harsh and shooting at a wide angle. Most exposures were for 30 seconds on a tripod.

A Favorite Place

Wenderina Joined for a ride on this glorious summer day. We stopped at one of my favorite photo spots... Indian Brook Falls in Garrison NY. I had to wait for the kids to clear out from their swimming hole... Hey who told them they could swim at MY waterfall.... LOL.

Indian Brook Falls - Black and White

I found this image I had made of Indian Brook Falls in 2007. It had originally been a nice shot with strong saturated greens from a summer morning... I worked on it again as a black and white and think it is stronger this way.

Indian Brook in the Snow.

I set out this morning in the pre-dawn light to photograph Indian Brook Falls in Garrison, NY. I have now photographed it in three seasons. I keep being drawn back to this lovely little subject. The early light helped me keep the snow from getting totally blown out and gave me the widest possible range of tones.

Tomorrow's Plan

Hello Fellow Artists:

Well with my portfolio(s) off for review at Cape Cod Art Association and having to wait several weeks before I have an answer on my application.... I asked myself this morning "what next?" There is a cool waterfall at Indian Brook in Garrison NY. I took the photo at left in the summer. I think I have just enough color left on the trees to get a fall shot maybe with reflections in the pool at the bottom of the falls. I'll pack up my stuff tonight and head out early tomorrow. Wish me luck.
