Here I am only concerned with finding the light values and the dark values. The mid tone is already there. Then it is a matter of shading to get a sense of shape to it. Alpha...I can't tell you how highly I rate this. Alpha+, I suppose, gets somewhere near. The style is perfect for the subject, the composition is spot on, even in the details - eg. the white vertical down the side of the bonnet.
